Explore Urban Child Institute’s past projects and initiatives.
First published in 2006, these annual reports were designed to compile the best-available data on children in our community. Many individuals and organizations were gathering important information on children, but the 2006 Data Book was the first time that the data had been assembled in a single document.
The Data Books were created to be a useful tool for government leaders, service providers, educators, and all community stakeholders who desire positive changes in Memphis and Shelby County.
Conditions Affecting Neurocognitive Development and Learning in Early Childhood
In 2006, the Urban Child Institute and the University of Tennessee Department of Preventative Medicine decided to do a large-scale study of 1,500 pregnant women, starting in their second trimester, to identify what factors during pregnancy and early childhood impact a child’s development and ability to learn. This CANDLE study – Conditions Affecting Neurocognitive Development and Learning in Early childhood – followed those women and their children for three years. Explore what we learned from this data collection in the report below.

Bluff City Baby
Welcome Bluff City Baby was a gift for new parents to encourage early literacy activities. Engaging in Touch, Talk, Read, and Play on a daily basis lays the foundation for children’s future language skills and healthy social-emotional development.
From 2020 to 2024, over 13,000 Bluff City Baby backpacks were distributed through co-funding partnerships with Methodist South Hospital and Regional One Health. Essential in-kind logistical support is generously provided by Knowledge Tree.
Goals
Increase Bluff City Baby backpack distribution year over year.
Celebrate and nurture all Bluff City Babies born in Shelby County and provide helpful resources to new parents.
Expand community partnerships to ensure Bluff City Baby backpacks include useful items for caregivers with newborns.
